Infertility

INFERTILITY is the inability to conceive after one year of unprotected intercourse. Women who are able to get pregnant but then have repeated miscarriages are also said to be infertile. If You and Your partner have been unable to have a baby, You’re not alone. One out of seven couples has trouble conceiving. In 40% of infertility cases, the cause of infertility is the man; another 40% of cases involve a female factor; and 10% of the cases involve both sexes. During this time, it is normal to experience feelings of Frustration, Jealousy and Anger. However, once you begin to explore your Medical options, you’ll find that ‘Ayurveda and Fertility Treatments’ offer more hope for a successful pregnancy than ever before.

Male Infertility
Common male infertility factors include azoospermia (no sperm cells are produced), asthenozoospermia (decreased motility of sperm) and oligospermia (few sperm cells are produced). Sometimes, sperms are deformed or die before they reach the egg.
Female Infertility

The most common female infertility problem is an ovulation disorder. Ovulation is necessary for the release of the egg from the ovary. Some signs that a woman is not ovulating normally include irregular or absent menstrual periods.

Other causes of infertility include blocked fallopian tubes (the tube through which the egg travels from the ovary to uterus), endocrine disorders, uterine fibroids, and anatomical defects of the uterus.

Several other factors such as age, stress, poor diet, athletic training, being overweight or underweight, tobacco smoking, alcohol, sexually transmitted diseases (STD), health problems that cause hormonal changes, can affect a woman’s ability to have a baby.

Infertility and Ayurveda

The principles of Ayurveda do not focus solely on disease. The main focus of Ayurveda is on wellness in all aspects of life. A branch of Ayurveda deals with reproductive issues, including infertility. This branch is known as Vajikarana. The name “Vajikarana” is derived from “vaji” which means “horse”. This is one dramatic example of virility. And in Ayurveda, virility is not separate from reproductive capacity. In Ayurveda, healthy shukra dhatu, or reproductive tissue, will determine a couple’s ability to conceive. And healthy shukra dhatu is built on the health of the rest of the body. Shukra tissue produces a woman’s ovum (egg), and a man’s semen.

In order to understand the Fertility Tests and Treatments, it is important to understand how conception naturally occurs. First, your Ovary must release (ovulate) an egg, which must be picked up by the Fallopian Tube. Sperm must travel through the vagina, into the uterus, and up into the fallopian tube in order to fertilize the egg. Fertilization usually takes place in the fallopian tube. Then, the fertilized egg, or embryo, travels down to the uterus, where it implants in the uterine lining and develops. Infertility results when a problem develops in any part of this process.

For a man, a first step of Fertility Tests is often a ‘Sperm Test’ or ‘Semen Analysis’. For women, a Set of tests are usually advised like USG, Hormonal Tests and Follicular Study etc to see if their ovaries are working properly. Women in their 30s who have been trying to get pregnant for six months should consider seeking help. A woman’s chances of having a baby drop rapidly every year after age 30.

Causes and Treatments

In Ayurveda, Infertility is compared with VANDHYATWA. According to Ayurvedic texts, the general causes of sterility or infertility are: Constituents of Garbha (Zygote/embryo/fetus); Rutu (Season/fertile period), Kshetra (Healthy Yoni, uterus and Passage, reproductive organs), Ambu (proper nutrient fluid, clarity of Hrudaya or psychology, properly functioning Vayu (normal Nervous System) and Sadbhavas (Mother, Father, Atma, Satwa, Satmya and Rasa). Abnormality in any one of these can cause infertility.Congestion or organic defects in the reproductive organs can be cured only through surgery, but infertility due to functional or physiological causes is easy to cure through Ayurveda and its applications. The vitiation of doshas Vata, Pitta and Kapha – any one of them or all of them together-is likely to lead to infertility.
